BBQ season is finally here, there’s no better way to celebrate summer with your friends. A BBQ isn’t a BBQ without burgers. Despite being seemingly simple burgers can often fall flat. Often being too small or overdone.

So how do you make a great burger on your BBQ? Let’s take a look.

What Makes a Burger Great?

Ingredients

A great burger starts with great ingredients. You could buy frozen burgers from your local supermarket. These aren’t going to get you the results you want, either make your own or grab some great burgers from a butcher. You could use beef, lamb, pork or even mushrooms as a burger.

Season

Depending on how you want your burger to taste, play around with your seasoning. For you minimalists, all you need is salt and pepper. For anyone else, play around with paprika, garlic powder and other seasonings. Experimentation could lead to your perfect burger.

Method

  1. Cook your burgers over high heat. Regardless if you are using gas, charcoal or anything else you want your burgers over high heat to form a nice crust and that flavour and texture everyone loves.
  2. Avoid pressing down on your burgers while cooking. All the juice you are squeezing out is flavour that should be in the burger. Don’t press out all that flavour just to make your grill sizzle.

Only flip your burgers once. 3 minutes each side as a rule of thumb for medium-rare or more.

  3. If your grill flares up, cover up your BBQ. Cutting off the oxygen should calm the flames. You don’t want chargrilled burgers. Alternatively, always keep a beer in your hand to put out the fire, or just to enjoy.
  4. Allow your burger to rest for a few minutes. This lets the juices redistribute into the meat and make for a nicer burger.

Serve and enjoy your great BBQ burger

Condiments

This is where you can let your personality shine through. Condiments and accessories turn a quality burger into a piece of art. Here are some top suggestions below:

  • Bun – Slice in half, lightly butter and toast
Cheese – Take your pick from classic American, cheddar, swiss or more
Greens – Add some lettuce, watercress or whatever takes your fancy
Onions – Red, yellow, sweet, caramelized or fried
Extra Veg – Add some gherkins, jalapenos, peppers or tomatoes
Condiments – Ketchup, mustard, mayo, BBQ sauce
Extra Toppings – If you’re really feeling adventurous add some bacon, fried eggs, pulled pork and more.
