No one likes waste. Food ingredients can get pricey, especially if you’re buying good cuts of meat, but how do you make it go further? We’re here to help, we have a load of top tips to help you make your food go further, while still being delicious.

Cook in Bulk

Batch cooking can be a great way to make your food go further and can make tea time much easier. You could make a simple bolognese that can be stored and feed your family for a good while. Just take the normal recipe and scale it up to use your full amount of ingredients, you could use a full 500g of steak mince and a few other ingredients, then next time you want to make spaghetti bolognese it’ll be a breeze. The ideas for bulk cooking are endless.

Choose Your Ingredients Well

When you’re buying your cuts and planning this week’s meals, think about which cuts you’ll get the most out of. For example, if you buy a whole chicken there are a million and one ways to use it. You can use it for a delicious Sunday roast, as a one-pot meal or split it into multiple recipes and even use it to make a stock (more on that later). Buying a lot at once can be worthwhile too, especially if you’re bulk cooking like we just mentioned. Why not check out our meat packs?

Utilise Your Leftovers

Why would you start from scratch making a meal when you can use yesterday’s food that is already there and still delicious? Not only will this save waste but it means your food is going further, you might be stuck on how to use leftover roast beef, but you can use it to make hot beef, onion and gravy sandwiches, or in a delicious beef enchilada.

Homemade Stock

Like we mentioned before, homemade stock is a great way to use a whole chicken, it’s simple to make and saves you having to buy stock from the shop. Once the chicken has been stripped of all its meat put it in a large pan of water with a choice of vegetables (this is a great way to use old veg too) and aromatics like garlic and peppercorn. From there leave it to simmer on a low heat for around 2-12 hours, then strain the liquid out and portion it out. Now you have a great base for homemade soup, stew and other recipes.

Add A Filler

Fillers are a great way to make your food go further. You don’t need a lot, but adding things like lentils to mince dishes or adding rice in with some shredded chicken can really bulk out your meals. Not only do you get more of a variety of nutrients in your meal but you bulk it up meaning you can get more from your food and make it go further.

So there you go! 5 great tips to make your cuts go further. Hopefully, this means you can make food last longer while still keeping it delicious. If you want to find some high-quality cuts of meat check our range of fresh meat, delivered straight to your door.
